Decorative Concrete, Done With Winter in Mind
Stamped concrete in Sioux Falls can look like flagstone, slate, cobblestone or brick, and it costs less than most real stone laid on a base. It is still concrete, so everything that protects a plain slab from freeze-thaw applies, plus a few things that only matter for decorative work. The pattern, the color and especially the sealer all need to be chosen for a place with long, salty winters.
How stamping works
The slab is built like any other: base, forms, reinforcement and air-entrained concrete. Color goes in two ways. Integral color is mixed into the truck so the whole slab is tinted. A color hardener can be broadcast on the surface for stronger color and a harder top. Then a release agent goes on, which keeps the stamps from sticking and leaves darker antiquing in the low spots. Crews press textured mats into the concrete while it is still plastic, working in sequence so the pattern lines up. The window is narrow: if the mats go on too soon the texture sags, and if they go on too late the surface is too stiff to take a clean print.
Where stamped concrete makes sense
- Patios, where the look matters most and there is no plow traffic
- Front walks and entries, for curb appeal
- Driveway borders and aprons, a stamped band around a plain broom-finished drive
- Around fire pits and landscape beds
We are more cautious about stamping a full driveway here. Deep textures can catch a shovel or plow blade, and the sealer on a driveway wears quickly under tires and salt. A broom-finished drive with a stamped border is a common middle ground.
Choosing a pattern and color
Ashlar slate and random stone are popular because joints can hide in the pattern. Seamless textures look natural and are easier to shovel. Earth tones such as tans, browns and grays tend to hold up visually as the surface wears; very dark colors show salt residue and fade more in sun. We bring samples to the estimate, and we suggest looking at them next to your siding and any quartzite or brick on the house.
The sealer is the upkeep
A stamped slab looks its best when the sealer is fresh. Sealer protects the color and slows water and salt from getting in. In this climate, plan on re-sealing every two to three years, sooner on areas that see a lot of traffic or sun. Choose a sealer with some grip, or add an anti-slip additive, because a glossy sealed surface can be slick when wet or frosty.
Caring for stamped concrete
Shovel with a plastic blade, not steel. Skip rock salt and other chemical de-icers, which are hard on both the sealer and the concrete. Rinse off spills before they soak in. When the surface starts looking dull or water stops beading, it is time to clean and re-seal.

A Stamped Job, Step by Step
1. Pick pattern and color
Samples come to the estimate, along with an honest read on where stamping fits your property.
2. Build the slab
Gravel base, forms, steel and air-entrained concrete, tinted at the plant if you chose integral color.
3. Color and imprint
Hardener and release are applied and the mats pressed in while the surface is at the right stage.
4. Cut, wash and seal
Joints are cut, excess release is rinsed off and sealer goes on after the cure.

Stamped Concrete Questions
Does stamped concrete hold up in South Dakota winters?
It can, if the slab underneath is built right and the sealer is kept up. The weak points are a worn sealer and de-icing salt. Re-seal every few years and keep salt off it.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
A glossy sealer can be slick when wet or frosty. Textured patterns help, and we can add an anti-slip grit to the sealer for walks and steps.
How much more does stamped concrete cost than plain?
HomeGuide's patio guide puts plain concrete at about $4 to $12 per square foot and stamped at about $9 to $30. Pattern complexity, number of colors and borders move the price.
Can you stamp my existing patio?
Stamping happens while concrete is fresh. An existing slab would need a stamped overlay, which only works on sound concrete. If your patio is cracked or sunken, replacing it is usually the better choice.
